Equipment

  • Large mixing bowl
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Fork or spatula
  • Grill or skillet
  • Meat Thermometer
  • Baking sheet (optional for toasting buns)

Ingredients

For the Patties:

  • 1 1/2 pounds ground beef
  • 1/2 cup crushed crackers or breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

For Serving:

  • Burger buns
  • Lettuce leaves
  • Sliced tomato
  • Sliced onion
  • Pickles
  • Cheese optional
  • Condiments: ketchup mustard, mayo

Instructions

  • Prepare the Patty Mixture: In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, crushed crackers, egg, Worcestershire sauce, milk, salt, garlic powder, onion powder, and black pepper. Mix gently by hand until the ingredients are evenly incorporated. Avoid overmixing to keep the patties tender.
  • Shape the Patties: Press the meat mixture into an even disk in the bowl. Divide into 6 portions for thick patties or 12 portions for thin patties. Roll each portion into a ball, then flatten into a patty slightly larger than the buns to account for shrinkage. Use a spoon to press a slight dent into the center of each patty to prevent puffing during cooking.
  • Preheat the Grill or Skillet: Heat the grill or a skillet to medium heat (350–400°F).
  • Cook the Patties: For thick patties: Grill or fry each side for 3–4 minutes, or until the internal temperature reaches 160°F. For thin patties: Grill for 2 minutes on each side.
  • Cook the Steak: In the same skillet, add the remaining 1 tablespoon of oil and heat over medium-high. Add the steak slices and season with the remaining 1 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Cook for about 5 minutes, tossing occasionally, until browned and just cooked through. Return the cooked veggies to the skillet, toss to combine, and warm through. Remove from heat.
  • Assemble the Burgers: Place the hot patties on the buns and add your favorite toppings, such as lettuce, tomato, pickles, cheese, onion, and condiments.
  • Serve: Serve the burgers warm with sides like fries, coleslaw, or a fresh salad.
  • Enjoy these flavorful, juicy burgers perfect for any occasion!

Notes

  • Prep Ahead: The patty mixture can be prepared a day in advance and stored in the refrigerator.
  • Storage: Cooked patties can be refrigerated for up to 3 days or frozen for up to 3 months.
  • Freezing: Freeze uncooked patties on a parchment-lined tray before transferring them to a freezer bag.
  • Reheating: Warm cooked patties in a skillet or oven to retain moisture.
  • Gluten-Free Option: Use gluten-free breadcrumbs and buns.
  • Cheese Tips: Add cheese during the last minute of cooking for perfectly melted results.
